World Report 2012: Eritrea

Eritrea marked 20 years of independence in 2011, but its citizens remain victimized by one of the world’s most repressive governments. They suffer arbitrary and indefinite detention; torture; inhumane conditions of confinement; restrictions on freedom of speech, movement, and belief; and indefinite conscription and forced labor in national service.
Arbitrary Detention
Since September 2001 or even before, Eritreans from all walks of life—government officials, leaders of government-controlled labor unions, businesspeople, journalists, and national service evaders or escapees—have been jailed for explicit or inferred opposition to President Isaias Afwerki and his policies. The number of Eritreans jailed for such opposition is difficult to confirm, but ranges from 5,000 to 10,000, excluding national service evaders and deserters, who may number tens of thousands more. Twenty prominent critics and journalists have been held in incommunicado isolation for a decade; nine are feared dead.

U.S. Department of State 2009 Human Rights Report: Eritrea

2009 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices

Eritrea, with a population of an estimated 5.5 million, is a one-party state that became independent in 1993 when citizens voted for independence from Ethiopia, following 30 years of civil war. The People's Front for Democracy and Justice (PFDJ), previously known as the Eritrean People's Liberation Front, is the sole political party and has controlled the country since 1991. The country's president, Isaias Afwerki, who heads the PFDJ and the armed forces, dominated the country, and the government continued to postpone presidential and legislative elections; the latter have never been held. The border dispute with Ethiopia continued, despite international efforts at demarcation. The situation was used by the government to justify severe restrictions on civil liberties. Although civilian authorities generally maintained effective control of the security forces, consistent and systemic gross human rights violations persisted unabated at the government's behest.
Human rights abuses included abridgement of citizens' right to change their government through a democratic process; unlawful killings by security forces; torture and beating of prisoners, sometimes resulting in death; abuse and torture of national service evaders, some of whom reportedly died from their injuries while in detention; harsh and life-threatening prison

Eritreans Let’s Unite our efforts!……

It is very unfortunate and distressful moment Eritreans passing through. May the Lord give us his mercy! Dear reader, I dedicate my message for the salvation of Eritrean victims.
Children, teen-age, men and women and the elderly are languishing under the merciless hands of Bedewins, the Rashida and Eritrean collaborators. Various reports have estimated over 4000 Eritreans have been killed in Sinai, many of whom their organs taken-out while alive. The suffering and daily killings of Eritreans continues unabated. The desserts of Sinai and the Mediterranean Sea continue eating Eritrean lives.

(RTTNews) - The European Union on Tuesday voiced concerns over the Eritrean government's continued violation of its human rights obligations under both domestic and international law, highlighting the cases of political prisoners and journalists being held in the country without trial for years.
In a statement issued Tuesday, EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton expressed the European bloc's deep concern over the continued detention without trial of a group of eleven prominent parliament members from the People's Front for Democracy and Justice as well as ten independent journalists, including the Eritrean-Swedish citizen Dawit Isaak, since 2001.
"Despite repeated appeals by the international community, including by the UN Human Rights Council and the European Union, these people have been detained for the last eleven years without any contact with the outside world, and with all rights suspended," the statement said.
Noting that they have been reports about the arrests and detention without trial of several other journalists in the African nation, Ashton said the European Union remains particularly concerned about the reported deaths of some of the political prisoners and the deterioration of the medical situation of others.
Ashton reminded the Eritrean government that continued lack of information on the whereabouts and the access to health care of the detainees were in "clear violation of several human rights obligations, such as the prohibition of arbitrary detention and the right of anyone deprived of his or her liberty to be treated with human dignity."
