Eritrean youths are being kidnapped by senior military officers, smuggled into Sudan and held to ransom, according to a report by Dutch and Swedish researchers. The captives are threatened with being sold to people traffickers if they do not raise tens of thousands of dollars. Some are freed if they raise the ransoms. Others are sold on to Bedouin traffickers in Sinai, even after money has changed hands, only to be tortured to extract further cash from their relatives.

Eritrea. Voices of Torture. (English version)

Is the Horn of Africa facing another collapsing state?

Just as the Horn of Africa is witnessing the slow restoration of one collapsed state - after more than two decades of anarchic conditions in Somalia - it may be facing the collapse of another.
The small country of Eritrea, only 20 years after gaining independence from Ethiopia, has emerged as one of the largest sources of refugees in Africa - as well as one of the most militarised societies in the world. It is increasingly displaying signs of withering state structures and an unsustainable humanitarian situation.
Although Eritrea is sometimes  referred  to as the North Korea of Africa, a more appropriate point of comparison may be Somalia and its descent into civil war. The already fragile security conditions in Eritrea's neighbouring states means that its collapse could have major implications for regional stability.
The Eritrean state has, since a 1998 border war with Ethiopia, been caught in a negative spiral of autocracy and deteriorating conditions. President Isaias Afewerki - the only leader this young nation has known - used the threat posed by Ethiopia as a pretext to eliminate

Lampedusa disaster: Why men flee Eritrea

Lampedusa disaster: Why men flee Eritrea

Samson Kidane, an Eritrean refugee in Switzerland Samson Kidane lost his best friend in a boat crossing the Mediterranean

The latest tragedy in the Mediterranean has, not before time, human rights groups say, put the spotlight on the situations which drive people to make the perilous boat journey to Europe, and the many dangers they face along the way.

It is believed most of the dead came from Eritrea and Somalia, so all must have taken not only the risky sea crossing, but a long and hazardous journey across the Sahara desert as well.

"I still can't believe it when I think about the Sahara," said Samson Kidane, an Eritrean who is now a refugee in Switzerland.

People smugglers 'target Eritrean asylum seekers'

  • Asylum seekers from Eritrea and Sudan await processing at the Italian port of Siracusa.

An SBS investigation has found asylum-seekers from Eritrea, in the Horn of Africa, are paying people-smugglers thousands of dollars to get them to Australia.

Many thousands of Eritreans have been fleeing their country in recent years.

United Nations officials have said it's a result of brutal government repression, including extra-judicial killings, disappearances, and torture.

Many of those fleeing are young people wanting to evade what seems like their country's endless national military service.

Eritrean regime brutality

Escape From An Eritrean Prison

Eritrea's human rights record has long faced international criticism. Located in the Horn of Africa, the country is home to five million people, but so closed to the outside world that individual stories tend to come almost exclusively from those who have fled.
Kidane Isaac was just 18 when he says Eritrean authorities arrested him for an unspecified crime. It's possible he was suspected of planning to desert military service. Thousands of Eritreans flee the country every month, many of them teenagers, to escape the mandatory and indefinite military conscription.
Isaac was eventually taken to a remote prison, where he says he was confined with dozens of other prisoners in a shipping container with metal walls that amplified the hot desert days and freezing desert nights.
"The food was two lumps of bread a day," he said. "Into the night I could hear cries of people being tortured."
Eritrea's human rights record has been widely criticized under President Isaias Afwerki, shown here speaking at the United Nations General Assembly on Sept. 23, 2011.

Sweden halts deportations to Eritrea

The move comes following an email sent on Thursday to all police authorities in Sweden to not forcibly deport people to Eritrea."From what I understand the Migration Board is planning to stop these type of forced deportations. That's why we've made this decision," Sören Clerton, head of the border control unit with Sweden's National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) told the TT news agency.Clerton added that police have had talks with both the Migration Board and human rights group Amnesty about the situation in Eritrea.According to Amnesty, Sweden is the only country in Europe that has continued to deport people to Eritrea in recent years."It's a real problem that Sweden has made a faulty assessment of the risks in

Eritrean female pilot seeks political asylum in the Kingdom

JAZAN — An Eritrean female flight lieutenant, who entered the Kingdom two weeks ago to fly back a military Eritrean airplane that landed earlier in the Kingdom, told Saudi authorities that she did not want to go back to Eritrea, according Jazan Emir’s Office spokesman Ali Zala, Al-Hayat daily reported.
Zala said the lady is a staff member of the Eritrean air forces and was sent by her government to fly back the airplane which an Eritrean pilot flew to the Kingdom earlier and landed at King Abdullah Regional Airport. The pilot and his co-pilot wanted the Kingdom to give them political asylum and authorities took necessary measures at the time.
“When the lady entered Jazan, she immediately expressed her desire to seek political asylum in the Kingdom or facilitate the procedures of her moving to the country where her father lives.”
Her request is being considered by authorities, Zala added

Eritrea / Human rights: UN rights expert to gather first-hand information from Eritrean refugees

GENEVA, 25 April 2013 / PRNewswire Africa / - The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Eritrea, Sheila B. Keetharuth, will carry out an official visit to Ethiopia and Djibouti from 30 April to 9 May 2013 to collect information directly from Eritrean refugees on the human rights situation in their country.
“Due to lack of access to Eritrea, I will engage with all others concerned by human rights in Eritrea, including those who consider themselves to be victims of alleged human rights violations, human rights defenders and other civil society actors,” Ms. Keetharuth said.
“In my first field mission, I will gather first-hand information from Eritrean refugees who have fled to neighbouring countries,” explained the rights expert, while expressing her appreciation that neighbouring Ethiopia and Djibouti have agreed to provide her access to the Eritrean refugee population residing in those two countries.
Since her appointment in November 2012, the Special Rapporteur has made

Press Release: OHCHR
UN expert to assess human rights situation in Eritrea through neighbouring countries
Banjul, 11 April 2013– The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Eritrea, Beedwantee Keetharuth, today regretted that the Eritrean Government continues to deny her access to assess the situation of human rights in the country, and announced she will undertake a mission to neighbouring countries to talk to Eritrean refugees.
“I have urged the Eritrean authorities to cooperate with my mandate, as required by the UN Human Rights Council,” Ms. Keetharuth said during the 53rd session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) in Banjul, The Gambia, where she held an ad-hoc meeting with the delegation of Eritrea in the margins of the event.

Support for Nonviolent Struggle for Change Gaining Ground in Eritrean Political

, 14 April 2013 21:48
epdp-logo3Even though there are a variety of choices to change a system, different people give different answers on the reliability and effectiveness of each method. Recent developments in our world helped us to evaluate the different methods of changing a system in theory and in practice. We see the following methods of change: through peaceful popular uprising, armed struggle, by coup d’état or through an invasion by another country. Keep in mind that each of the above avenues has its own weaknesses and strengths. Therefore, after examining and evaluating every stated way of struggle, EPDP convincingly chose the nonviolent avenue and early on included it in its political documents.
EPDP advocacy for basically nonviolent democratic struggle did not start because of the popular eruption in the Middle East and North Africa. Rather, those uprisings underscored the power of that method. Thus we observe today that this method is making inroads within the Eritrean opposition. ENDF Condemns Repeated PFDJ Terrorist Acts, Urges UK to Refuse Visa to Eritrean Official
endf-banner-1At its regular meeting held on Sunday 24th February 2013 The Coordinating Committee of the Eritrean National Democratic Forces (CC/ENDF) condemned the kidnapping attempt against its member, Mr. Assefaw Berhe, on Friday 22 February 2013 while on his way to join a pro-democracy rally organised by the Eritrean community in London. All indications so far show that the culprits were agents of the Eritrean regime.
The Coordinating Committee noted with concern the new development and resolved to raise the matter with the appropriate authoriries in the UK to ensure that gangs associated with the PFDJ regime are not allowed to intimidate pro-democracy Eritreans living in the UK and elsewhere in the free world.

The Revolution Was Televised

The Revolution Was Televised
Though Eritrean president Isaias Afewerki claimed on February 11 that the Eritrean military’s takeover of the information ministry was nothing to worry about, very few people in the region believed him. On January 21 a force of 200 to 300 Eritrean soldiers, backed up by armored vehicles, surrounded the information ministry headquarters in Asmara. The soldiers told the director general of Eritrean state television to broadcast a demand that all political prisoners be freed. The broadcast was made and then the state television went off the air for the rest of the day. One source claimed that the broadcast statement included a demand that the 1997 constitution be implemented. Exiled Eritrean opposition groups (most of them have a presence in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa) have been claiming for several years that discontent in the Eritrean military was growing and that there are increasing demands within the military for economic and political reform. Since the January 21 incident in Asmara, the exile groups have said the information ministry incident proved their claim beyond doubt. Initially several exile groups called the incident a mutiny and the first stage of a revolt against Isaias and his regime. The soldiers, however, returned to their barracks. Their leaders did not call for the removal of Isaias. One source reported that the dissident soldiers were enlisted personnel led by mid-level officers. No senior officers were overtly involved, though since the incident there are reports that a handful of generals have told Isaias that Eritrea’s economic situation is a disaster and that reform is necessary. Action alert: Eritrean asylum seekers to be deported

From the young activists in Israel with Amnesty International, an urgent appeal to Diaspora Jews who remember the times when we were refugees:
STOP THE DEPORTATION OF 25 ERITREAN ASLYUM SEEKERS FROM ISRAEL TO ERITREA OR UGANDA
“Your Only Way Out of the Israeli Prison is to Uganda or Eritrea” — Immigration Authorities to Eritrean Asylum Seekers detained in Saharonim Prison
25 Eritrean asylum seekers are in imminent danger of being deported back to Eritrea from Saharonim detention center in Israel. Israeli authorities in the facility told the asylum seekers that the only way they would ever get of the Israeli prison would be to go to Eritrea or Uganda. These individuals are currently being held under the Anti-Infiltration Law which mandates their automatic detention for a minimum of three years without trial.
Being released as an asylum seeker or refugee is impossible as prisoners lack access to the forms the Ministry of Interior requires to begin the RSD process. Therefore, after months of detention, many individuals have signed forms saying they want to go to Uganda and a very few have signed saying they want to go to Eritrea.
News reaching human rights groups over the last few days make it seem that even individuals who had signed to go to Uganda are now in the process of being deported to Eritrea. We are unsure exactly when/if the deportations will take place, but we do fear that it could happen over the next week

New Initiative, New Beginning, for Coordinated Struggle

At the end of its meeting on January 27, 2013, the Executive Committee of the Eritrean People’s Democratic Party (EPDP) underlined that the political cloud hanging over our people can be cleared only when the fragmented opposition organizations are willing to coordinate with one another. EPDP hopes that the past bickering of the political organizations is by now a lesson learned that can give way to a conducive ground for a new phase for coordinated struggle. Based on that expectation, Executive Committee designated a Standing Committee headed by Party Chairman that to conduct dialogue in spurring a new phase for coordinated struggle among the political and civic organizations. With this gesture, the EPDP leadership called upon the concerned parties to break free from the road blocks of the past and show their readiness for renewed commitment for coordinated struggle.

Eritrea’s president says no fear of unrest after army mutiny
Isaias_Af10By Aaron Maasho
(Reuters) – Eritrea’s President Isaias Afewerki sought on Monday to calm fears of unrest, and in his first reaction to the storming of the information ministry ago by dissident troops three weeks, blamed “bankrupt enemies” for being behind the attack.
Eritrean soldiers, backed by tanks, took over the ministry on January 21 and obliged the director general of state television to appeal for all political prisoners to be freed.
Calm soon returned in the capital, but Eritrean opposition activists in neighbouring Ethiopia say there is growing dissent within the army, Africa’s second biggest, over economic hardship.
The incident sparked protests by exiled Eritreans in Europe, who briefly occupied embassies in London, Rome and other cities last month to express support for the mutinous soldiers.
Isaias said his administration had chosen to remain silent to avoid “serving the ploys of bankrupt enemy quarters”.
“Entertain no worry at all, as there was, and does not exist, any reason for being apprehensive,” the information ministry website quoted him as saying on Monday

Eritrea made a rare foray into international headlines on Monday Jan. 21, as news agencies and social media sites disseminated speculation of a coup attempt. Reliable information on events in Asmara is hard to come by, however, with the tiny East African nation being one of the world’s least open societies and allowing no independent journalists to operate. One signal that all was not well in the Eritrean capital, however, was the fact that the state television service, which is broadcast from inside the headquarters of the Ministry of Information, went off the air for several minutes — for the first time since its creation in 1993.
Although reports of what took place vary wildly, accounts by opposition figures and dissidents claim that the channel’s leading news presenter appeared on air and read out a brief statement calling for a change of the 1997 constitution and release of political prisoners — estimated by Human Rights Watch to number between 5,000 and 10,000.

Human Traffickers Kidnap 8 Refugees from UNHCR Camp at Shagarab; Incident Provokes Serious Conflict

On 22 January 2013, armed Rashaida tribemen entered and kidnapped 8 Eritrean refugees, seven of them women and a man.
Angered camp residents tried to confront the Rashaida tribesmen around the region. However, the armed Rashaida started random shooting. The desperate refugees continued to fight back with stones and sticks. The incident claimed a still unknown number of casualties on both sides.
A while later, armed Rashaida tribesmen from the Mestura and Menkut localities started moving towards the refugee camp riding 60 vehicles. Sudanese security and army members in the region arrived on time to stop the raiders.
The UNHCR-sponsored refugee reception camp of Shagarab, located on the Eritrea-Sudan border, has three divisions called Camp North, Camp Center and Camp South. Refugees are usually kidnapped while trying to move between the three divisions of the large camp.

It is to be recalled that the Shagrab camp was visited by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Mr. Antonio Guterres a year ago on 12 January 2012.

Voice of Assenna: Change is Coming to Eritrea

The 'Arab Spring' Arrives in Eritrea

BRUSSELS (IDN) - Arab Spring has arrived in the Horn of Africa. Young people have been campaigning for the last year, inspired by events in Tunisia and Egypt, phoning households in the country that has been in the grip of its leader Isaias Afewerki since independence from neighbouring Ethiopia in 1991.
The young campaigners were asking citizens to stay home on Friday afternoons to protest against the dictatorship. The country has been in clutch of fear, while journalists, church leaders, writers, politicians and ordinary citizens have been locked up in jails. The country even scores below North Korea in terms of press freedom.
Since Monday, January 21, a mutiny has gripped the country as some hundred soldiers occupied the Ministry of Information, and subsequently the airport and the Central Bank. The newsreader read out that a constitution would be introduced and that political prisoners would be released.
The mutiny follows in the aftermath of high officials deserting the 66-year old leader, the latest being the feared Minister of Information, Ali Abdu, who recently sought political asylum in Canada. The coup seems to meet little resistance; local diplomats reported that shops were open and that everything was quiet in the streets. Telephone lines were open. So far it looks like a smooth transition.
Eritrea became independent in 1991 after a 30-year war against Ethiopia, but in 1998 war broke out again between the two countries. In 2001, just a day after 9/11 several critics of President Afewerki were locked up, they were never released and never brought into a court room. A prominent prisoner is Dawit Isac, a journalist – writer whose release has been demanded by a worldwide campaign. Following the crack-down those who had the means to leave the country left.
In recent years the population impoverished further and drought and hunger drove many to flee, despite a shoot-to-kill policy at the border. Human traffickers made use of the vulnerability of these refugees, as they were sold on and ended up in torture camps in the Sinai desert. Torture included burning, hanging, whipping and rape while ransoms were demanded of up to US$ 50.000. Relatives collecting the ransoms for the hostages would sell all their belongings, but could never be sure that they would see their relative alive again.
The UN and independent research concluded that the government of Eritrea itself was complicit with the human trafficking. The population has become increasingly desperate. It is therefore not a surprise that a transition is now being forced. Afewerki spent most of his time abroad as he is reportedly ill. His archenemy Meles, President of Ethiopia, died in 2012 in a hospital in Brussels.
Question
The question is, will the coup succeed? It is likely that it will. Firstly, Eritreans are not likely to oppose a transition, as they have suffered economic collapse and drought in recent years. Secondly, Afewerki has no friends among its neighbours, who are in fact likely to quietly support a transition. Moreover, the U.S. and the 27-nation European Union (EU) have become increasingly irritated with the support of Afewerki to Al Shabaab in Somalia and to the piracy in the Gulf of Aden. Eritrea is a very strategic military location that is certainly of interest to the West.
In the unlikely event that the claim for a transition is contested by factions of the military the international community will demand that Eritrea implements the constitution, frees political prisoners and establishes a transitional government with broad representation. And hence our view that the Arab Spring has finally reached the Horn of Africa, throwing its shadow further into the African continent.

Possible failed coup attempt in Eritrea

More than 100 dissident soldiers stormed the Ministry of Information in the small East African nation of Eritrea on Monday and read a statement on state TV saying the country's 1997 constitution would be put into force, two Eritrea experts said.
The soldiers held all of the ministry workers - including the daughter of the president - in a single room, said Leonard Vincent, author of the book "The Eritreans" and co-founder of a Paris-based Eritrean radio station. The soldiers' broadcast on state TV said the country's 1997 constitution would be reinstated and all political prisoners freed, but the broadcast was cut off after only two sentences were read and the signal has been off air the rest of the day, Vincent said.
By late afternoon there were indications the soldiers' attempt would fail. A military tank sat in front of the Ministry of Information but the streets of the capital, Asmara, were quiet, and no shots had been fired, said a Western diplomat in Eritrea who wasn't authorized to be identified by name.
Vincent stopped short of calling it a coup d'etat and said it wasn't immediately clear if the action was a well-organized coup attempt or what he called a "kamikaze crash."
Later Monday government soldiers surrounded the ministry, an indication the action by the dissident soldiers had failed, said Martin Plaut, a fellow at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies in Britain.
"It looks like it's an isolated attempt by some soldiers who are completely frustrated by what is going on. But it wasn't done in a coordinated manner," Plaut said. "They did seize the television station, they did manage to put this broadcast out, but the government is still functioning calmly. There is nothing on the streets."
Eritrea is an oppressive and politically isolated neighbor of Ethiopia and Sudan situated on the Red Sea that broke off from Ethiopia in the 1990s. The U.S. government's relations with Eritrea became strained in 2001 as a result of a government crackdown against political dissidents, the closing of the independent press and limits on civil liberties, conditions that the State Department says have "persisted to this day."
Isaias Afworki has ruled the country as president and head of the military since 1993.
If the power grab attempt by the dissident soldiers fails, they are likely in for severe punishments, Vincent and Plaut said.
"People call it the North Korea of Africa and that is accurate, so you either win or you're dead, and I think these people are dead," Plaut said. "One can't be absolutely sure but that's what it looks like."
