Italian coast guard rescues thousands of migrants and refugees in Mediterranean

GENEVA, April 14 (UNHCR)–The UN refugee agency on Tuesday renewed its call for stepped up rescue operations in the Mediterranean after the Italian Coastguard saved some 8,500 migrants and refugees trying to cross the high seas by irregular routes to Europe from North Africa.

Those rescued since last Friday included an estimated 3,000 people in four boats and 16 dinghies rescued on Monday. At the same time, at least nine people are known to have drowned. These figures are provisional and could rise, as not all the boats have disembarked yet and some are still on their way towards various ports in southern Italy.

The coastguard often requests merchant ships to take part in search-and-rescue operations if all other vessels are being used. On Monday, seven ships travelling towards Libya were asked to help boats in distress and to take those rescued to Sicily. UNHCR has also called

UNHCR Seriously Questions Reliability of The Danish Report on the Situation in Eritrea

In statement released this week, the UNHCR expressed “a number of concerns as regards the methodology” used by the recent report of the Danish Immigration Service (DIS) and its confusion of sources as well as its selective use of unverified facts from usually ill-identified interlocutors. The Danish report wished to portray that the situation in Eritrea is “not as bad as reported” by the rest of the world.

The DIS report refers to have met “a UN agency” in Asmara without saying which agency, and the UNHCR wished to confirm that that reference should not implicate it.

UNHCR also regretted that the report given to DIS by its Shire office could have been useful in helping DIS reach right conclusions. Instead, the relied on “on speculative statements” of other informants regarding nationality identification of UNHCR registered refugees in Shire.

The UNHCR also expressed its frustration with the report’s failure to make ample direct quotes from its sources and in its lumping together information provided it by various informants.

The UNHCR statement added: “The (DIS) report does not include any reflections on the reliability of specific sources of information. No information is provided in the report about the regulatory framework for the media, NGOs, research institutes and other actors in Eritrea, nor does the report contain an assessment of the impact of these regulatory frameworks on the independence of certain sources and the reliability of information provided by these sources”.

The East African Journalists Association (EFJA) has called on the international community to step up pressure on the Eritrean government to release detained journalists and to support all exiled Eritrean journalists working from other countries. EFJA Chairman William Janak, who also represents the International Journalists Association in East Africa, has welcomed the UN move last week to appoint three experts as members of the new UN Commission of Inquiry on Eritrea. Janak believes the “Commission’s report will form an important basis for further action to help the press and human rights situation in that country.” Experts are doubtful whether the Eritrean government will cooperate with the UN Commission of Inquiry allowing investigation into reported human rights abuses in the country. It has repeatedly denied entry permit to UN Special Rapporteur Sheila B. Keetharuth who is now a member of the commission. Banning free press

ሓይሊ ብምጥቃምን ፍልልያት ብምጽሕታርን ሰላም ኣይርከብን

ሰላም ዝደሊ ንመገዲ ሰላም ዘጣጥሕ ስራሓት ሒዙ ምስ ዝጐዓዝ እዩ። ሰላም ብሓይሊ ወይ በስገዳድ ወይ ፍልልያት ብምግፋሕ ፈጺሙ ኣይመጽእን ኢዩ።  በመገዲ ሓይሊ ወይ ፍልልያት ኣቢሉ ዝጓዓዝ ካብ ድሑር ስሚዒታትን ኣንነትን ምጉጅጃልን ዝተላዕለ ንጸረ-ሰላም ዘዕምብብ ስራሓት ኢዩ ዝበቁል። ሰላም ኩሉ ግዜ ንሽግራትካ ተላዚብካ ብግልጺ ብምግላጽ ናብ ናይ ሓባራዊ ረብሓ ዝቋመት ኣንፈት ኢዩ  ዘተሕዘካ። ሰላም ብሓደ ኰንካ ሓቢርካ እትለዓለሉን ንነፍስኻ እትእርመሉን ስለዝኾነ ንኹልኻ ብማዕረ ዝሕብሕብ እውን እዩ።

ናይ ኩልና ድሌት ንለውጢ ቅሩባት ምስእንኸውን እቲ  እንደልዮ ብሓባር ኰንና ድማ ምስ እንትልሞ{ ሽዑ እቲ ሓቀኛ ሰላምን ምርግጋእን ዝፍጠረሉ ባይታ ተመድሚዱ ማለት ምዃኑ እዩ። ምኽንያቱ መላእ ህዝቢ ነቲ ንሱ ዝኸዶ ኣቕጣጫ ብስምምዕ እንተደኣ ቀይሱን ኣሚቱን ንዝኾነ ይኹን ዝፍጠር ሽግር ይኹን ዘጋጥም ፍልልያት ክፈትሖ ጸገም ኣይህልዎን።
